A strange but beautiful short-story. He could only just get the picture finished, and only so so, at that: If you ever get the chance to see the production, don’t miss it. I found a corner of it torn off, lying in a field.
An allegory, remember, is a “symbolic story,” a kind of disguised representation for meanings other than those indicated on the surface. Niggle ends up discarding all his other artworks, or tacks them onto the main canvas, which becomes a single vast embodiment of his vision. Tomorrow, if you like. I related to Niggle, guys. It’s noggle the condition of the artist and it will appeal to anyone who’s ever tried doing something creative at least once in their lives. I am sending more and more there.
Leaf by Niggle review – Tolkien’s lord of small things gets a one-man show
His company is called Puppet Statebut the show will feature no puppets. For now he saw that the Forest was there too, opening out on either side, and marching away into the distance. I came close to sobbing. And in the telling, something extraordinary, something almost miraculous happens: The war had arisen to darken all horizons.

Still, all I can really say about this little story is pretty much repeating the thought I had once the story ended, which was: A great green shadow came between him and the sun. Niggle discovered in Eternity that his Tree was just a shadow of something greater and more perfect.
They saw a man, he looked like a shepherd; he was walking towards them, down the grass-slopes that led up into the Mountains.
That man has never let me down. The four works now form a strong whole: Requires some work, but the work is worth it in the end.
Most of these things he tolkein were a nuisance; but he did them fairly well, when he could not get out of them: Working only to please himself, he paints a canvas of a great Tree, in the middle of a Forest, with many other trees around as well.

Actually it seemed to him wholly unsatisfactory, and yet very lovely, the only really beautiful picture in the world. Well, you’ve got his house now, as well as the one in town, so you need not grudge him his name.
He was moderately well-off, and yet he arrived here almost destitute, and had to be put in the paupers’ wing. The Tree, at any rate, was curious. All the leaves he had ever laboured at were there, as he had imagined them rather than as he had made them; and there were others that had only budded in his mind, and many that might have budded, if only. Niggle, the painter, is a kind hearted soul and goes out of his way to help his friends and neighbours but eventually finds that this prevents him from completing his masterpiece.

Like Niggle, Tolkien came to abandon other projects or graft them onto his “Tree”, Middle-earth. There was a knock on the door. But he discovers that the forest is in fact the Tree and Forest of his great painting, now long abandoned and all but destroyed except for the tklkien perfect leaf of the title which is placed in the local museum in the home to which he cannot return — but the Tree here and now in this place is the true realization of his vision, not the flawed and incomplete form of his painting.
