Incantation not only reinforces my admiration of Alice Hoffman’s oncantation, but also fuels my interest in this sad and tragic subject. Apr 18, Social Voice rated it really liked it. She is now looking upon the stars that she will never see again in hopes of remembering those of her native land.
An interesting novel, but not one which I alicd recommend if you’ve not read Hoffman’s work before. This book made me so sad. As books are burned in the streets, and Jews from the nearby ghetto are murdered, she confronts the reality that she is a Marrano, part of a community of underground Jews who attend a special “church.
They do everything together, but when they’re both sixteen years old, a great evil comes to their town. Pages flew upward, disappearing, turning to embers and ash, drifting into nothingness. It’s a good learning tool about the conflict of religions and the time period of the inquisition, but does incantatioh for geography or the Spanish language.
This is a gripping story. Her use of language, her weaving of history through her books unlike the modern-day Practical Magiceven her celebration of women, who by our nature have a special “knowing. I loved this book in all it’s descriptive beauty and powerful symbolism.
Remember it’s what’s inside that matters. It is probably a bit easy for high schoolers, and boys might have a hard time relating to the story of female friendship. I started this book ijcantation morning and finished it by the evening. After being betrayed by her most dear friend, Estrella realizes that sometimes we must lie to keep the alixe we love the most safe, and sometimes we must stand up for who we really are, even if it means losing everything.
Estrella, a young teen on the brink of womanhood, learns that to “be yourself and you save yourself” is the most important lesson her family’s persecution had taught her. Incantation is the first young adult book I’ve read by the wonderful Alice Hoffman and the first book I’ve read about the persecution of Jewish people during the Spanish Inquisition.
Estrella and her family aren’t who she always thought they were. I actually got teary-eyed at the end of this book, which is unusual for me!
