Though uneven in its writing, Dalrymple includes interesting detail of everyday observation and encounters. He’s very funny and observant and has clearly done so much reading dalymple this trip before he even sets off. Overall a not so spectacular read unless of course you are planning to undertake a similar journey or, as was in my case, to complete the set of Dalrymple’s travel anecdotes.
It is learned and comic, and a most gifted first book touched by the spirits of Kinglake, Xznadu Byron and E. Looking for Alaska Theatre Review: Throughout, his passions for the two do come through, and there’s a great degree of skill in providing the ‘right’ history to link with what he’s seeing in his travels rather than ‘all’ the history regardless.

I like to think that I have read a little of the literature relevant to the countries he passed through but time and again I was brought up short by some tale of a character, event or place of which I had never heard but that had caught Dalrymple’s imagination and whose story he wished to share.
It is relatively small in size giving the reader a feeling of it being edited of the lengthy descriptions the author may have in mind.
Wklliam Dalrymple made his journey in ‘s which should have been easier for him rather than Marco Adlrymple but again Marco had the golden tablet provided to him by Kubla Khan.

It lacks a lot of the reflection that I’ve come to associate with him, and dalrympl lot of the humor was really unpleasant. The trip is completed adlrymple the Iranian revolution but before the Soviet conflict in Afghanistan and before the border to China were more open. Stylish, witty, and knowledgeable about everything from the dreaded order of Assassins to the hidden origins of the Three Magi, this is travel writing at its best.
