I read the novella through in one night. They begin a relationship, but when Ian and Tom meet up for lunch, Ian mentions that it is going nowhere and that he’ll have to break it off.

Either way, the un-comfy storyline is one that will stay with me for a while, which I always consider to be a good thing, and I’m very curious as dogis how the movie will compare the sex scenes probably much more lascivious than what amount to mere insinuations in the book.

I read it as sortof a corrective to the old, boring story about old men fucking younger women. I’ve seen some professional critics describe this story as being an exploration of the oedipal complex. Roz and Lil have been best friends since childhood. Lessing does a wonderful job showing the emptiness felt by Mary and the anger felt by Ian, misplaced as it was.
