You’ll find essential background history and details related to Imam al-Tahawi and the conditions he lived in. Different versions are creex by his biographers of his conversion to the Hanafi school, but the most probable reason seems to be that the system of Abu Hanifa appealed to his critical insight more than that of Shafi’i. Some of the footnotes could easily be expanded upon into their own books as they can be incredibly thorough.
I’m taking a class on this book currently. Imam al-Tahawi’s creed is therefore useful both as a record of core and enduring principles of Tahaei theology, as well as a glimpse into some of the dynamics of the early formative period of Islamic thought. Hamza did a tremendous service to the English-speaking world with this publication. The straight-forwardness of the translation and the minimalist commentary makes this work extremely practical iam extremely useful as a reference work – the first of Zaytuna’s curriculum series.
