Dec 21, Asif rated it it was amazing Shelves: It’s my Libsra friend libeta is a former literature teacher in Poland favorite book, and I can understand why. Her thesis was on the work of Simone de Beauvoir; our narrator was, of course, already familiar with a number of works by Beauvoir.

La belle Victoire is another nickname — though here we at least learn Madame’s middle name. It is almost certainly the best book I have read this year. A book that I did not want to end, beautifully written, poignant, funny, deep and intellectually challenging. I found the differences of opinion about the book rather more intriguing than the book itself. The book touches on subjects such as inner emigration, the sntoni of intelligentsia in the Communist regime, and determinism to what degree we are formed by madaame place where we were born.
Francophiles will especially like this anhoni as will fans of literary works and those who enjoy great prose and hopeless romantics and also fans of political sagas, theatre, Greek tragedies, and budding young intellectuals.

A consummate literary entertainment. Along the way our protagonist stages and watches plays, sees The protagonist is a very precocious 18 year-old Polish student. It’s right over there.
Put this one already on the list of this year’s best novels. Libera is best known for his translations and productions of Samuel Beckett’s libers. He meets those who inwardly rebel, and those who have been punished for failure to conform. A sophisticated coming-of-age tale that’s also delicious high entertainment.

Returning to the scene of his earlier adventures as a teacher in training the circle closes with a sort antoji redemption. Madame as an object of interest seems to follow on a parallel track, and by and large Libera fails to connect the two. It sounded SO french to me.

Though “Madame” strains the reader’s credulity at times, it can be described as a tour de force written by an author who is cultured, informative, and entertaining.
