However, these characters are socialized by adults who reflect McCaffrey’s unpleasant and jarring assumptions about people of color, poor people, and those artificially left without the magical talents she invented and depicted. Despite some questionable quirks, the core elements — the unionized Talents, crippled Peter, and scrappy Tirla — hang together in a relentless if brainless plot. And in the seamy underworld of near-criminal children was another brilliant mind in danger from a ruthless group of child kidnappers.
Showing of reviews. Rhyssa Owen was the one responsible, both for finding Talents and training them. It’s probably the best book about the Talents that she wrote, though I’m mccffrey fond of The Rowan which I’m currently going through again via audiobook since it doesn’t yet exist in ebook format.

And future novels are cool. Some of the villains are cardboard to give the reader someone to hate. The Center for Talents is well established, but still has struggles to contend with in pevasus untalented world. The only issue I really had with this is the gap between the previous book’s characters and this one.
